A look out on the pasture THE NCSU BLOODLINE

  • The grand sire of the flock is Rocky from John Taylor in Temecula, California. Rocky was born to Yvonne and Zachary on June 16, 2000. Breeder: Carol Elkins, Pueblo, Colorado. He died January 2010. It took over ten years to bring back this group. The biggest challenge was to breed out the non shedding woolliness inherited from Zachary

"Zachary was out of Claude Hughes' flock. Some of the VSU sheep are also out of Hughes' flock, but Zachary is, to my knowledge, the only sheep that Hughes sold to the public. His flock was the original North Carolina State University research flock. So Zachary is out of the NCSU or just NC bloodlines. You'll see "NC" in many of the ID numbers of VSU sheep.(Carol Elkins, private communication)"

THE TENNESSEE BLOODLINE

  • IKE and AARON, half-brothers, are from Robert Saunders, Colorado. He acquired Joanne Hamsher's dispersed flock. The line is characterized by a compact, muscular body and a deep chestnut color. We will try to preserve that particularity.
"The Tennessee bloodline is called that because it was a "found flock" that I located in Tennessee. It probably could be traced back to either VSU or NCSU, but we couldn't prove that because there was no paper trail. We wanted to keep the sheep together as a group to preserve their unique genetics, so they became known as the Tennessee bloodline.* "(Carol Elkins, private communication)

THE VSU BLOODLINE

The rams are composed of: Lone Star Caracas, long, tall and dark; gentle Lone Star Kade, looking like his mother Ruth and definetely like Ramses; Bellwether Zamora, perfectly balanced and the dandy Bellwether Fernandez .The ewes are from Critterhaven, Bellwether and Sunny Slope.

  • Currently, 42 ewes are grazing freely in the enclosed pasture. The rams and the boys are separated in a coral, three fences away( not a joke!)

  • The flock is strictly on hay diet. No grain. But they enjoy corn chips and pita bread as treat.

Winter, a Great Pyrenees mix, Ma-Landy, a Great Pyrenees and Miss Lulla, a black mouth cur are watching efficiently over the flock. As well as mother-daughter LLamas: Mama LLama and Cria-Baby.
